Trump’s Greenland tariffs spark GOP criticism
On Friday, Trump announced import duties on goods from eight European NATO countries after they deployed small military contingents to the Arctic island in opposition to his plans to annex the Danish autonomous territory.
“These tariffs are unnecessary, punitive, and a profound mistake. They will push our core European allies further away while doing nothing to advance US national security,” Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski wrote on social media Saturday, urging Congress to prevent tariffs from being “weaponized” against US partners.
North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis described Trump’s tariff move as “bad for America, bad for American businesses, and bad for America’s allies,” while benefiting adversaries. He added, “The fact that a small handful of ‘advisors’ are actively pushing for coercive action to seize territory of an ally is beyond stupid,” warning it could damage Trump’s legacy and NATO relations.
Earlier, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell argued that annexing Greenland would yield little for the US that the island’s people were not already willing to grant. He said Trump’s efforts to push European NATO members to spend more on defense would be wasted if the drive to acquire Greenland “shattered” their trust.
